‘Dizzy me. Leven met evenwichtsstoornissen’

In het zopas verschenen boek ‘Dizzy me.

French employers discriminate Muslims

Muslims face "massive discrimination" when applying for jobs, according to the first scientifically validated study of anti-Muslim bias among employers in France
In a study published online on the 24nd of November by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Stanford political scientist David Laitin shows that a Christian citizen with an African heritage is two-and-a-half times more likely to get called for a job interview than an equally qualified Muslim citizen with the same ethnic background.

"The French have a very strong belief that their republican institutions are blind to ethnicity and religion, and that these institutions are an antidote to discrimination," Laitin said. "We can now tell them that the results of our work show that the society is not blind to religion and that their refusal to collect data will permit this discrimination to continue. Hiding behind the veil of republicanism is not a solution to the issue of discrimination in France."

The unemployment rate among British Muslim men is around 13 per cent, which is approximately three times higher than the rate among men belonging to other faiths. Young Muslims are at even higher risk of being unemployed. Muslims aged between 16 and 24 have the highest jobless rates of any group and are more than twice as likely to be unemployed compared to Christians of the same age, with a jobless rate of 28 per cent compared with 11 per cent, according to the Office of National Statistics.

Researchers of the Stanford study created and mailed out 275 pairs of résumés to French employers advertising for jobs. Each of the paired résumés was identical in terms of job qualifications and experience except for the names of the applicants.
One of the applicants had a Christian given name, "Marie Diouf", while another had a Muslim given name, "Khadija Diouf". To emphasise the religious difference in the applicants, Maire Diouf said she worked for Catholic Relief and was a member of Christian scouts, and Khadija Diouf said she had worked for Islamic Relief and was a member of Muslim scouts.
As a scientific control, the researchers compiled a third fictional résumé in the name of "Aurélie Menard", who could be identified as a rooted French person with no assumed religion – unlike "Diouf" which in France is easily identified as a Senagalese name. Every employer received a résumé of Aurélie Menard with a résumé of either Marie Diouf or Khadija Diouf – employers may have detected a test if they received applications from both Marie and Khadija Diouf, researchers said.

Khadija Diouf received a response rate of 8 per cent while Marie Diouf's response rate was 21 per cent – a highly significant difference. "It amounts to massive discrimination. The agenda is to try to find out what is driving it," Dr Valfort said.

What is surprising is the intensity of the discrimination. If anything we have underestimated it, partly because we made the job applicant female and we know that Muslim males face higher discrimination," she said.

Islamic Clothing Most Popular Fashion in Indonesia

Long known as feminine and demure, Indonesia's traditional kebaya is headed for a makeover at the hands of innovative designers.
Growing demand for stylish yet still modest fashions in the world's most populous Islamic nation is helping power efforts to bring Islamic fashion into the modern age, a movement symbolised by changes to the iconic kebaya, a blouse-dress combination.

Fun prints, intricate detailing, colours so bold as to be psychedelic and a mix of delicate lace all graced the catwalk at the recent Jakarta Fashion Week. One designer even paired the kebaya with red-and-yellow striped tights.

"I think it's a good presentation because if you wear Muslim clothing like this, it's not necessarily boring," Jakarta Fashion Week project manager Petty Fatimah told Reuters.

"You can definitely expect to see more Islamic fashion in the future and it is for everybody. If you're not a woman who wears Islamic clothing you can still wear it."

Though Islamic clothing is not mandatory throughout much of this vast nation, many women struggle with the desire to be both fashionable but dress in line with Islamic principles that rule against showing hair or skin.

In a nod to local mores, U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama donned a headscarf on her visit to Jakarta's Istiqlal mosque earlier this month. But wearing the headscarf is not mandatory and regulations concerning clothing are fairly liberal save for Indonesia's West Aceh district, which is the sole upholder of sharia or Islamic law.

Earlier this year, authorities in West Aceh began giving away long, loose skirts to Acehnese women wearing tight jeans.

Yet despite coming across as "sexy" to some due to its tight fit and use of see-through materials, the kebaya has managed to escape censure even from Islamist groups such as the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), who criticized the wives of the president and vice-president last year for not wearing headscarves prior to the presidential elections.

MODERN DESIGNS, MUSLIM CLOTHING

For those in the industry, allowing the kebaya to be reinvented paves the way for designers who want to introduce modern designs into Muslim style clothing.

Themed "Styling Modernity," models in kebaya outfits launched Jakarta's third Fashion Week earlier this month, with 16 selected designers putting their own spin on the garment.

"If you look at the scene five years ago, women didn't have choices. But now, it's growing, and we have many designers who design Muslim wear," said designer Lenny Agustin, who is known for her eclectic style.

Other collections, with titles such as "Romantic Return," "Garden Luxury" and "Catch Your Eyes," featured billowy ankle length dresses, harem-style pants and tunic suits which still complied with Islamic clothing norms.

Keeping stylish fashion in line with Islamic norms isn't just a gesture for traditionalists, Petty Fatimah noted.

"Fashion is a big business and our population is very big. By focusing on local fashion that would cater to the local population, it is a big opportunity," she said.

Homemaker Tuttiyah, 55, who wore a long, full-sleeved blue tunic-style blouse with black three-quarter pants, said she doesn't feel torn between style and modesty because there are so many choices available. She wears a headscarf outside her home.

"Those who prefer the traditional version can still buy and wear that, whereas those who want to keep up with modern times can buy and wear the modern ones," she said.

"If you want to look good, if you want to look fashionable, you have to keep up with modern times and changing trends."

BOOK PRESENTATION

The Unlikely Secret Agent
by Ronnie Kasrils
(Jacana, £14.95)

Morning Star Friday 26 November 2010 by John Haylett

"Don't worry about being a romantic," journalist Victoria Brittain told Ronnie Kasrils at his book launch in London's South Africa House this week.
She was chairing a Q&A session and quizzing Kasrils about his wife Eleanor, the subject of this book, who died suddenly last year.
Britain described the work as an "amazing love story" and so it is, oozing passion and admiration for his comrade and life partner.
Ronnie and Eleanor met at around the time of the Sharpeville massacre when a crowd of unarmed African protesters against apartheid pass laws were fired on by police. Sixty-nine women and children died, many shot in the back as they fled.
The Kasrils were both white, middle class and relatively privileged but with consciences.
"Sharpeville hit us with shock force. We already had strong feelings about racism, which we found repugnant, and were committed to freedom and justice," Ronnie recalls.
"Human beings confronted by that kind of challenge are able to make swift transition."
Ronnie detailed his own development in his previous book Armed And Dangerous from joining the Communist Party, becoming involved in the liberation movement's armed wing uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) and heading MK special operations before becoming a minister in the post-apartheid governments of Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki, eventually serving as security minister.
However his aim in writing The Unlikely Secret Agent was to shed light for the first time on the remarkable role played by Eleanor.
Many people know that she was arrested, beaten, threatened and transferred to the criminal wing of a mental hospital from which she escaped. But Ronnie reveals her true significance.
While the Special Branch pursued her in order to get to her husband she was, unknown to the police agents, a vital link within the underground to leading communists Bram Fischer and Hilda Bernstein.
The brutality of the apartheid police was already legend and when taken into custody she was allowed to see some African comrades who bore the marks of the dreadful beatings they had suffered.
One told her of his electric torture treatment and advised her of an informer in their ranks.
"She was terrified of being beaten, but she was more terrified at the thought of possibly breaking and giving information, of becoming a traitor," Ronnie explains.
He points out that communist journalist Ruth First, assassinated in Maputo by apartheid agents in 1982, noted in her book 117 Days that in prison the enemy watches your every move, that prison is a very difficult place to plan anything.
Yet Eleanor - "a skinny slip of woman, in the struggle for two or three years" - began planning her escape within hours of being in the hands of her tormentors.
This was not because "like a bird in a cage, she wants to be free," Ronnie recalls, but because "she's got all these incredible secrets and is frightened she will break."
She went on hunger strike, cried constantly, threw tantrums and was eventually sent to Fort Napier mental hospital where she cultivated friendships, made contact with the underground, disguised herself and escaped with the help of an African nurse.
From there she and Ronnie went to Dar-es-Salaam and put themselves at the disposal of the movement, spending long periods apart because of their separate roles before returning to a free South Africa.
Their hopes of a long and well-earned retirement together were dashed by her premature death.
Ronnie recounts two occasions when the couple came close to capture, the first when he and Eleanor had rented a small cottage in Durban.
"There was a trapdoor in the middle of the floor leading nowhere but to the foundations and Eleanor insisted that we clear it out. We put a bed without legs on top of it so that it sat full squat on the floor.
"At 2 o'clock one morning, there was a knock on the door and she insisted that I get through into that hole and pushed the bed back into place."
As Eleanor had suspected, it was the Special Branch looking for Ronnie. She told them that they no longer lived together and they left.
When Ronnie surfaced after half an hour, he got dressed and was about to walk out of front door when she demanded that he wait, looking out and spotting the police Volkswagen up the street, thereby preventing him from walking into an ambush.
The other occasion was on a bombing mission against a police target when they were disturbed by someone approaching through the shadows of a narrow lane.
They reacted in an obvious and appropriate way.
"We held each other tight and kissed passionately and I'll remember that kiss for the rest of my life," he recalls, chuckling.

NOTIZ DER PANMUNJON MISSION DER KOREANISCHEN VOLKSARMEE AN DER US SEITE

Panmunjom Mission of KPA Sends Notice to U.S. Forces Side

Pyongyang, November 25 (KCNA) -- As already reported, the south Korean puppet war-like forces Tuesday committed another grave military provocation such as firing shells into the territorial waters of the DPRK side in the West Sea of Korea.
The revolutionary armed forces of the DPRK took a prompt and resolute physical counter-action against the provocateurs who dared fire even shells into the territorial waters of the DPRK side while staging the maneuvers for a war of aggression against it codenamed Hoguk.
This once again confirmed the unshakable stand of the army of the DPRK not to allow even in the least anyone to encroach upon its inviolable territorial waters.
There came from the U.S. forces side a notice blaming the DPRK under the absurd charge that the recent shelling took place in the area under its military control and it was a "violation of the Armistice Agreement."
The Panmunjom Mission of the Korean People's Army today sent the following notice to the U.S. forces side in connection with its attempt to misrepresent the incident, while thoughtlessly shielding the south Korean puppet forces who dared make a preempt shelling at the DPRK:
The south Korean puppet warmongers' firing of shells into the territorial waters of the DPRK side in the West Sea of Korea on Nov. 23 was a premeditated and deliberate military provocation from A to Z and a war action in fact.
On Nov. 22, the south Korean puppet forces made no scruple of announcing that they would fire shells into the territorial waters of the DPRK side with artillery pieces they deployed on Yonphyong Island while staging Hoguk exercises for a war of aggression against the DPRK, straining the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
In this connection the DPRK side sent a telephone notice to the south Korean puppet military at 8 a.m. on Nov. 23, strongly urging it to immediately cancel the plan for firing shells into the territorial waters of the DPRK side. In the notice the DPRK side seriously warned that if it paid no heed to this demand, it would face a resolute physical counter-strike and would be held fully responsible for all the ensuing consequences.
The south Korean puppet forces, obsessed by hysteria for invasion of the DPRK, committed such reckless military provocation as preempting the firing of shells into the territorial waters of the DPRK side in the West Sea of Korea by mobilizing artillery pieces deployed on Yonphyong Island, defying the repeated efforts made by the DPRK to prevent military conflicts and preserve peace and stability in the said waters.
The island, therefore, played the role of an outpost from which a military provocation was perpetrated against the DPRK and it deserved punishment meted out by the army of the DPRK according to its self-defensive measure.
The Panmunjom Mission of the KPA in the notice particularly emphasized the fact that the U.S. forces side, too, is to blame for the incident.
The West Sea of Korea turned into disputed waters always fraught with the danger of confrontation and clash between the north and the south because of the illegal "northern limit line" unilaterally fixed by the U.S. inside the territorial waters of the DPRK. The U.S., therefore, cannot evade the blame for the recent shelling.
If the U.S. forces side truly desires the detente on the Korean Peninsula, it should not thoughtlessly shelter the south Korean puppet forces but strictly control them so that they may not commit any more adventurous military provocations such as intruding into the waters of the DPRK side and shelling for the purpose of defending the illegal "northern limit line".
The prevailing situation goes to prove that it is the south Korean puppet forces which actually violated the Armistice Agreement and it was none other than the U.S. which sparked off the conflict in the above-said waters.
This being a hard reality, the U.S. and the south Korean puppet forces are foolishly contemplating an additional provocation aimed to orchestrate another farce and charade such as the "Cheonan" case while kicking up rows and holding confabs one after another such as the declaration of a "state of emergency" and "a meeting of ministers in charge of security," far from drawing due lesson from the recent shelling.
The Korean People's Army will deal without hesitation the second and third strong physical retaliatory blow if the south Korean puppet warmongers commit another reckless military provocation out of all reason.
The U.S. would be well advised to drop its inveterate bad habit of pulling up others, falsifying the truth about the situation.

S. Korean Group's War Maneuvers under Fire

Pyongyang, November 24 (KCNA) -- The British Association for the Study of Songun Policy and the British Group for the Study of the Juche Idea made public a joint statement on Nov. 18 accusing the U.S. and south Korean war maniacs of their anti-DPRK war maneuvers.
The statement denounced them for planning to stage the provocative Hoguk war exercises again.
It went on:
This saber-rattling poses a serious threat to the peace of the Korean Peninsula and the rest of the world.
The projected war exercises are part of the ceaseless war maneuvers targeted against the DPRK and run counter to the spirit of the June 15 Joint Declaration and the October 4 declaration.
They are also part of the moves of the U.S. imperialists and the south Korean authorities to stifle socialist Korea of Juche centered on the popular masses.
We demand the U.S. imperialists and the south Korean authorities halt at once their war maneuvers for aggression on the DPRK.
The statement called on the world progressive figures and adherents to the Juche idea, the Songun idea, to take positive actions against the above-said war racket of the U.S. and the south Korean warmongers.

Dat was even schrikken!
