Hundreds of people marched through central Warsaw on Tuesday to protest against the government's plan to sign an international copyright treaty, warning that it would infringe on freedom of expression online.Several popular websites also shut down for an hour over the issue.
Warsaw's support for the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (Acta) has sparked days of protest including attacks on government sites by groups who fear it will lead to online censorship.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk insisted on Tuesday that his government will not give in to the protesters.
He said that Poland would sign the international agreement which aims to protect intellectual property - like music and books - and products including pharmaceuticals and designer items.
Acta enjoys widespread support from the producers of music, films and a range of goods enjoying copyright protections.
But one site, www.wykop.pl, said that "under the banner of fighting piracy and concerns about intellectual property Acta will limit the rights of each of us."
Nadja zegt: Samen met DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) en SOPA is het vrije Internet, zoals we het nu kennen (hoelang nog?) bedreigd.
Nadja sagt: Freiheit die sie meinen!
