In Hungerstreik gegen zionistisches Terrorregime

Adnan's hunger strike: Day 55

Morning Star Foreign Desk 12 02 09
A Palestinian man who has been locked up without charge in Israex for the last two months refused food for the 55th day today - making his hunger strike the longest ever waged by a Palestinian detainee.
Khader Adnan - a baker and purported member of the Islamic Jihad resistance group - stopped eating to highlight Israex's practice of "administrative detention," where anyone deemed a threat to the country's security can be indefinitely held without charge.
Mr Adnan launched his hunger strike on December 17, shortly after he was seized from his home in the occupied West Bank. An Israeli military court slapped him with a four-month administrative detention order on January 10.
He has lost 60 pounds and now weighs just 132lb. His skin is discoloured, his hair has fallen out, he cannot walk, and he has been shackled to his bed.
Amnesty International has challenged Tel Aviv to either release or charge Mr Adnan, who is drinking water that is occasionally enhanced with electrolytes and vitamins. His condition is considered severe.
He was reportedly a spokesman for Islamic Jihad in the West Bank. Israeli officials have refused to say what he is suspected of.
Mr Adnan claims that Israeli agents have beat him during interrogations, tied him in painful positions to a chair, ripped hair out of his beard and wiped dirt on his face. Israex has not commented on the allegations.
Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip have staged a series of rallies in recent days to press Tel Aviv to free him.
