Prof. Yakow M. RABKIN: Juden die gegen den Strom des Zionismus schwimmen

What if a Jew swims against the stream of Zionism?
ÖZGE ÖZÇELIK
ISTANBUL

Picture :
Many Jews around the world maintain a critical stance against Zionism. As one of those people, Professor Yakov M. Rabkin, expressed his views to Daily Sabah about the issues of anti-Semitism, coexistence in the Middle East and Jewish perspectives on the state of Israel.

On March 2, 2014, hundreds of thousands of Haredi (ultra-orthodox) Jews came together in Jerusalem. They protested against an amendment to the Israeli conscription law that would no longer exempt students of the Torah from compulsory military service. The new law puts in doubt an entire system of agreements made between David Ben-Gurion, the first Prime Minister of Israel, and non-Zionist Haredi rabbis in 1948. Ben-Gurion, convinced that Judaism would die out, was buying time and trying to calm down the rabbis' opposition to the Zionist state. Ben-Gurion's prediction has proven wrong. More than a million Israelis now consider themselves Haredim, and they remain aloof from the country's secular majority. The demonstration last March was not the first such confrontation between Haredi Jews and the State of Israel.

Yakov M. Rabkin, a Soviet-born Jew who has taught at the University of Montreal in Canada for over forty years, has critically analysed the relations between Zionism and Judaism, and between Jews and the State of Israel. In his academic work, he dispels confusions about Zionism and Judaism, and investigates relations between Zionism and anti-Semitism. While teaching contemporary Jewish history he has studied Judaism with rabbis in Montreal, Paris and Jerusalem. He has also carried out academic studies on the history of science and technology, Jewish history, and has been active in interfaith dialogue.

His 2004 book, "A Threat from Within: A Century of Jewish Opposition to Zionism," grabbed worldwide attention and has been translated into a dozen of languages, including Hebrew and Turkish. In the book he sheds light on the rejection of Zionism on the part of most prominent rabbis of the past one hundred and fifty years.

A brief history of Zionism

It is crucial to know what Zionism really is in order to comprehend all debates for and against it. That is why Rabkin begins by defining Zionism: "Zionism is an attempt to gather Jews in the Holy Land by political, physical means." And shortly after, he outlines the birth of Zionism as a political ideology. Secularization and nationalism in Europe, particularly in Eastern Europe, enabled thousands of European Jews to embrace Zionism, leaving behind their commitment to Torah and its commandments. It is these "secular Jews" who unilaterally declared the independence of Israel in 1948, and have largely governed the country ever since.

It was Theodor Herzl, a Budapest-born Jew profoundly estranged from Judaism, who is considered the father of modern political Zionism. He formed the World Zionist Organization and promoted Jewish migration to Palestine with the purpose of forming a Jewish state. Rabkin emphasizes the Eastern European, particularly Russian, influence on Zionism. "This Eastern European influence is still very strong in Israel. All the prime ministers of Israel without exception were either born in the Russian Empire or come from parents who were born in the Russian Empire. They all come from little towns, none of them come from big cosmopolitan cities like Paris, Saint-Petersburg or Istanbul. No wonder they recreated a ghetto in the Holy Land."

The original idea of physical, material gathering Jews in Palestine is of Protestant Christian origin. After two centuries of rather marginal existence, this idea gathered momentum in mid-19th century. While still unknown to the Jews, it penetrated the corridors of power in London as it dovetailed with British imperial policies, looking for a reliable foothold in the Middle East. And it was only 50 years later, by the end of the 19th century, that Zionism acquired first adepts among some Jews in Eastern Europe. It is this small minority of Jews that became the pioneers of a new state in the Middle East. This secular minority had no use for Judaism and its moral values, it was determined to act. Rabkin says: "Jews, including myself, pray three or four times a day for the return to the Holy Land. But praying for something and actually taking it from its owner are two different things."

All Jews hold different opinions

Quite a few people believe that all Jews are Zionists. This is a cardinal belief of the Zionists, who claim to be "the vanguard of the Jewish people". This confusion between Jews and Zionists is a political misconception and a source of danger. Some Muslim and other media blame local Jews for the way Israel treats Palestinians. This is not only unfair because local Jews have zero influence on Israel's policies. It is also ironic because those very media that claim to be opposed to Zionism have in fact become purveyors of the Zionist ideology that conflates Jews and Zionists, local Jewish communities and the State of Israel.

"Israel calls itself a Jewish state and claims to belong to all the Jews of the world. But most of the Jews of the world prefer to live outside of Israel. And apparently, about a million Israelis also live outside of Israel."

Are those who oppose Zionism anti-Semitic?

Criticism of Israel is often confused with anti-Semitism. Indeed, quite a few anti-Semites criticize Israel. But the protagonists of Rabkin's book are most prominent rabbis of the last century, and nobody would call them anti-Semites. This is why the book has attracted so much attention around the world. Some people are unhappy that the book sheds light on the fundamental differences between Zionism and Judaism. They would rather silence this whole issue. But Rabkin believes that intellectuals must explore such issues even if they go against the current. "Let me tell you an old Jewish story. When one does not know if the fish one has bought is dead or alive, one must put it in a stream. If it swims against the current, this shows it is alive".

European nationalism: Parallelism between Turkey and Israel

The emergence of nationalism in Europe in the 19th century transformed many countries on the continent and rebuilt them with new secular, national identities. According to Rabkin, such a historic transformation constitutes a common ground for Turkey and Israel in terms of building new secular identities, language reform and regional issues.

He points out that "Ottoman identity was not a national identity just like Jewish identity is not a national identity." Another parallel between Turkey and Israel, Rabkin adds, is the stance of their first leaders, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and David Ben-Gurion, respectively. "The perception of Atatürk and the perception of Ben-Gurion was nearly the same. For them, religion is a thing of the past. … For Ben-Gurion, religion was to die away within a generation or two. However, it did not happen this way, and the numbers of religious Jews keep growing. Turkey also has known a movement back to Islam."

Old Yishuv: Coexistence in the Middle East

Jews have lived as a minority for millennia. In Christian lands they experienced a lot more persecution than under Islam. In the Ottoman Empire, including the Holy Land, Jews, Muslims and Christians lived together in relative harmony. For Jews, Istanbul was the most peaceful corner of Europe for many centuries. This coexistence must continue.

Zionism aimed at and succeeded in building up a Jewish majority in Israel/Palestine, which engendered the century-old conflict. But Rabkin is quite hopeful about prospects for peace: "I am an optimist, even though peace will require tremendous efforts. I believe that there can be no peace without justice. Economically and politically, the Palestinians today are much weaker than the Israelis. Stability demands balance. Many Palestinians lost their houses, their lands since 1947, and they ought to be compensated for lost property. For instance there was a Palestinian village where the campus of Tel Aviv University stands today. Nobody suggests to rebuild that village, but its former residents and their heirs must be compensated."

Rabkin also published a book this year, "Comprendre l'Etat d'Israël" (Understanding the State of Israel), which offers a new perspective on the Israel-Palestine conflict. And always as a swimmer against the current, his new book should bring a new breath to our understanding of Israel

Amtliche Erklärung der KDVR

U.S. Can Never Justify Screening and Distribution of Reactionary Movie: Policy Department of NDC of DPRK
Pyongyang, December 27 (KCNA) - The spokesman for the Policy Department of the National Defence Commission (NDC) of the DPRK Saturday issued a statement denouncing the U.S. for screening even dishonest and reactionary movie hurting the dignity of the supreme leadership of the DPRK and agitating terrorism while groundlessly linking the unheard-of hacking at the Sony Pictures Entertainment to the DPRK.
The statement said that much scared at the hacking attack of justice made by the "guardians of peace", the Sony Pictures Entertainment hastily suspended the screening of the above-said movie. But at the zealous prodding of the U.S. administration and wicked conservative forces, it again buckled down to distributing the movie, failing to guess a miserable fate to be faced by it in the future, it added:
U.S. President Obama is the chief culprit who forced the Sony Pictures Entertainment to "indiscriminately distribute" the movie and took the lead in appeasing and blackmailing cinema houses and theatres in the U.S. mainland to distribute the movie.
Obama always goes reckless in words and deeds like a monkey in a tropical forest. When the Sony Pictures Entertainment made public a statement that it would give upthe distribution of the movie, frightened by the merciless retaliatory strike, Obama urged it to unconditionally screen the movie, claiming that the disgrace suffered by Sony Pictures Entertainment means sorrow of the U.S., why did it issue such a statement as holding a white flag without informing the president of it?, it is the violation of the freedom of expression and a threat to the security of the U.S. and it is necessary to make symmetric counteraction, considering the hacking attack was made by "north Korea", though it is not clear who was behind it, the statement said, and went on:
Dancing to the tune of Obama's outbursts, Kerry, McCain, Bolton and other wicked conservative politicians zealously prodded the Sony Pictures Entertainment into distributing the movie, blustering who else but "north Korea" caused property losses worth hundreds of millions of dollars to it.  If the U.S. is to persistently insist that the hacking attack was made by the DPRK, the U.S. should produce evidence without fail, though belatedly.
If the U.S. cannot open to public evidence due to "protection of sensitive information source" as expressed by the FBI, the U.S. may conduct a joint investigation with the DPRK in camera.
However, the U.S. is behaving recklessly, trumpeting about "symmetric counteraction", "combination of invisible sanctions and visible sanctions" and "re-designation of sponsor of terrorism" while linking the hacking attack with the DPRK without clear evidence and sure ground.
In actuality, the U.S., a big country, started disturbing the internet operation of major media of the DPRK, not knowing shame like children playing a tag.
We had already warned the U.S. not act like beating air after being hit hard by others.
Of course, we do not expect the gangsters to pay heed to our warnings.
When the public is becoming increasingly vocal about the hacking attack on the DPRK media this time, the U.S. feigned ignorance, saying that they should ask "north Korea" and the U.S. neither admits nor denies.
The prevailing situation clearly shows that the U.S. is adding to its crimes by screening the movie "The Interview."
With no rhetoric can the U.S. justify the screening and distribution of the movie.
This is because "The Interview" is an illegal, dishonest and reactionary movie quite contrary to the UN Charter, which regards respect for sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs and protection of human rights as a legal keynote, and international laws.
It is also because it is a new politically-motivated provocation made by the U.S., pursuant to its hostile policy toward the DPRK as it is a movie for agitating terrorism produced with high-ranking politicians of the U.S. administration involved.
This is the reason why the world is branding "The Interview" as a typical product of the U.S. anachronistic act of challenging not only the dignity of the supreme leadership of the DPRK but also human justice and conscience and encroaching upon peace and security.
The anti-U.S. sacred war at present precisely means protecting justice and peace.
If the U.S. persists in American-style arrogant, high-handed and gangster-like arbitrary practices despite the repeated warnings of the DPRK, the U.S. should bear in mind that its failed political affairs will face inescapable deadly blows. -0-

Sony's making of film on North Korea act of stupidity: Analyst (VIDEO)

Press TV – 24.12.14 An analyst says the making of a comic movie by a US entertainment company about the fictional assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was a “colossal act of stupidity,” Press TV reports.
James Fetzer, a professor at the University of Minnesota Duluth, told Press TV that the production of the film “The Interview” by Sony Pictures was also provocative.
“The creation of this movie from the beginning was a colossal act of stupidity and I can’t believe that Sony is going forward with its release under these circumstances,” he said, after the US company announced it would release the movie.
He further said that Hollywood is now very much under the influence of the Zionists.
US officials say Pyongyang targeted Sony Pictures in a hacking attack to halt the planned release of the movie. North Korea denied any involvement in the cyber attack and proposed a joint investigation with Washington.
The hack, which has been described as the most devastating cyber attack on a US business, has paralyzed Sony Pictures and led to the cancelation of the screening of the controversial movie.
The hackers threatened 9/11-style terrorist attacks on the US movie theaters screening “The Interview.”

J.B. TITO Concerning the National Question and Social Patriotism

(November 26, 1948)
“…The charge is continually levelled against us that we are nationalists; but not a single shred of evidence has been brought forward in support of such irresponsible assertions. What was our attitude in this respect during the Liberation War? It was obviously internationalist, because in the war we conscientiously performed, not only our national duty, but also our international duty. And what has been our attitude in this respect since the end of the war? It has obviously been internationalist, because we have assisted to the limits of our powers the countries of people's democracy which have needed our help, regardless of whether they asked for our help or not. We have never turned a deaf ear and refused to offer all possible assistance to the progressive movements in other countries which have needed our help, regardless of whether they have asked us for it or not. And right up to the present we have not moved an inch from this standpoint.
On the question of whether we are nationalists or not I can say the following: we are nationalists to the exact degree necessary to develop a healthy socialist patriotism among our people, and socialist patriotism is in its essence internationalism. Socialism does not require of us that we renounce our love for our socialist country, that we renounce our love for our own people. Socialism does not require of us that we should not make every possible effort to build up our socialist country as quickly as possible, in order that we may so create the best possible living conditions for our working people. Our creative drive in building up our country, that is the creative drive of our workers, our youth, our people's intelligentsia, and all our working peasants and citizens, who are voluntarily contributing their share to the work of construction within the People's Front, — none of these things need, or indeed can, be stigmatized as some sort of nationalist deviation. No, this is socialist patriotism, which in its essence is profoundly international, and for that reason we are proud of it.
A moment or so ago I touched briefly on these questions, that is to say, I quoted a few examples. I did not give a concrete analysis of the substance of the kinds of interference and dishonest steps taken against our country by the countries of people's democracy, in other words, by all those who should be the last people to act in such a way. I am leaving all that for another occasion, because, although it would momentarily throw more light on the whole matter, it would not do any good in the present situation, rather it would do damage to the common cause. …”
Excerpt from “Speech held at the Slovene Academy of Arts and Sciences, Ljubljana November  26, 1948.

„Land ohne Volk?“ – Ein Besuch am russisches jüdisches autonomes Gebiet von Yakow RABKIN

A land without a people?: A visit to Russia's Jewish autonomous region
A visit to Birobidzhan, where Jewish autonomy hasn’t exactly worked out — and yet, the sign for Lenin Street is still written in Yiddish and public monuments commemorate Sholem Aleichem.
By Yakov Rabkin
Last summer, after three months of teaching in Japan, I decided to return home to Montreal via Birobidzhan, in Russia’s Far East. The Jewish Autonomous Region was getting ready to celebrate its 80th anniversary, and I easily found people to host me.
Built by Jewish enthusiasts from a dozen countries including Argentina, Canada, France, the United States and British Palestine, Birobidzhan is conceptually akin to Israel, which also considers Jews as a nationality rather than a confession. But unlike the State of Israel, Birobidzhan was built on a true “land without a people” and did not have to displace anyone to make the Communist Jewish dream come true. This is one of the reasons an earlier plan to create a Jewish autonomous region in the Crimea, populated for thousands of years, was abandoned in favor of the Far East. Of course, most settlers came from within the Soviet Union, particularly from the Ukraine and Belorussia, where millions of Jews had been living for centuries. They wanted to contribute to the edification of socialism explicitly as Jews.

Kim Jong Un Enjoys Art Performance of Servicemen's Families
Pyongyang, December 9 (KCNA) - Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army Kim Jong Un, first secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and first chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission, together with the participants in the Second Meeting of KPA Exemplary Servicemen's Families, enjoyed a performance of art groups of servicemen's families of KPA units, who won at the fifth round of the second-term contest among art groups of KPA servicemen's families, and made a speech there.
Kim Jong Un together with Ri Sol Ju appeared in the auditorium of theatre.
The performance was given by members of art groups of servicemen's families of KPA units 564, 966, 233, 593, 287, 630, 380, 243, 468 and 600.
Its numbers included serial choruses "Eternal Smile", poem and story telling "Paektusan Family Members and Socialism" and drama on true story "Father".
The performers sang in an excited tone of the noble ideological and moral world of servicemen's families who remain loyal to the Songun revolutionary leadership of Supreme Commander Kim Jong Un, with their deep yearning and reverence for the great Generalissimos Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il and the Supreme Commander.
Among the audience were Hwang Pyong So, So Hong Chan and Ryom Chol Song.
At the end of the performance, Kim Jong Un mounted the stage to make a speech.
In his speech he said that he came to realize once again the fact that the mightiness of the DPRK's revolutionary armed forces does not come only from the powerful sophisticated striking means and thanks to the devoted efforts of the servicemen's families, the KPA has fully discharged its noble mission and duty for the times and history to reliably defend the party and revolution despite any upheaval.
He noted that he was determined to work harder to lead the revolutionary armed forces to the eternal victory as the supreme commander, keeping their trust and expectation in his mind all the time.
It is the great pride of the party and country to have a large revolutionary force of such sturdy and great women as the servicemen's families, he added.
He stressed that their husbands and children will fight more bravely and always hold higher the red flag of revolution to live up to their expectation.
